Diadema Antillarum

Beneficial to reefs, a victim of parasitic die off in the Caribbean. No direct known cause. A reef remains stable when the ecosystem is stable. A shift in even 1/2 a degree can cause major changes in balance. Urchins eat algae to keep corals healthy, which means healthy fish, impacting the oceans and up the food chain.

These mass events can change ecosystems dramatically. In a few years we have seen the urchins completely disappear and hundreds of ghosts line the beaches, their shells empty and bleached. The event slashed urchins populations by 98% in the Caribbean. [AP News] Coral reefs are in trouble.

β€œThe sea, the great unifier, is man's only hope. Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: we are all in the same boat.”
